Heading 5
London & Kent Coast
The "Surrey Sandbelt" is one of the best golfing regions in the world, mainly due to the resources mother nature has blessed the area with. The sandy soil which drains freely provides firm ground conditions similar to links land, whilst the native heather, gorse and beautiful tree's provide aesthetically pleasing natural obstacles. This really was heaven on earth for the course architects of the early 20th century, and still is to this day for all the golfers that enjoy these wonderful courses. On top of the golf there is a wealth of luxury hotels, restaurants and attractions in the area as well as London being on its doorstep, you really have all the ingredients for the holiday of a lifetime.
The only thing the area is missing is the history of an Open Championship; just a couple of hours drive South East to the Kent coast and there are 3 courses laid side by side which have all hosted an Open, most notably Royal St Georges which will host the 149th Open Championship in 2020.

Featured Courses
Sunningdale (Old & New)
Rich in colour and character played through a mixture of heathland and woodland, Sunningdale possesses two of Great Britain’s most beloved golf courses; it is truly a golfers paradise. Both courses are equally magnificent in their own right, although major championships tend to be played on the Old; past champions at Sunningdale include the likes of Bobby Jones, Gary Player, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Bernhard Langer.  Some words on Sunningdale by the great Tom Watson: “Some of the American players have not had chance to play courses like Sunningdale before, and I tell them it is how golf should be. It is unique and it brings out the child in you”.

Walton Heath boasts 2 truly world class heathland courses in the tranquil Surrey countryside. The Old and New courses at Walton Heath are pure tests of golf, both featuring in the UK & Ireland top 50 courses with the Old course consistently ranking in the top 100 courses worldwide. The club is a US open final qualifying course and has hosted an array of professional and amateur events including the Ryder Cup in 1981 and the 2018 British Masters.

The Berkshire (Red & Blue)

Two highly picturesque courses of great natural beauty that blend into their surroundings, both courses at The Berkshire prove challenging, yet fair tests. The Red course has an unusual scorecard consisting of 6 Par 5’s, 6 Par 4’s and 6 Par 3’s; the par 3’s are arguably the most intimidating collection in England, however this is compensated for by the birdiable par 5’s. This fun golf course was ranked 85th in the world by Golf Monthly Magazine in 2010, the neighbouring Blue course may not rank as highly, but is equal in terms of elegance and considered by members to be a tougher scoring course.

St Georges Hill

Considered by many as Harry Colt’s finest work, the 3 nine hole loops at St Georges Hill will take your breath away. Colt utilised the natural lay of the land to create dramatic holes with great changes in elevation, requiring a refined strategy to navigate around without finding yourself in the heather that lines the fairways. The clubhouse is an architectural masterpiece and the panoramic views of the course from the clubhouse are just as beautiful. Prepare to be amazed.

 Swinley Forest

One of the most exclusive private clubs in the country- play will only be allowed by visitors under special permission from the club. The course is a thing of beauty, carving its way through the royal hunting forest and open heathland. Swinley’s history is unique. Founded by Lord Derby and his friends in 1909, his passion resulted in a Golf Club recognised as both very special and different from its first day. Ladies were welcomed, handicaps were disregarded, dogs encouraged and there have only ever been two members’ competitions each year.

Hankley Common

Heathland meets links on this fast running inland masterpiece by James Braid and Harry Colt. The signature hole on this expansive site of special scientific interest is the 7th, a 180 yard par 3 over a valley of thick, tangled heather onto a double tier green. Even with the addition of new tees to lengthen the course it is still quite modest in length, however it deserves the utmost respect as any wayward balls will undoubtedly find trouble in the form of thick rough, heather and fairway bunkers. Stunning and overwhelmingly spacious, this isn’t one to miss.

Royal St Georges

Founded in 1887 and intended by its founder, Dr William Laidlaw Purves, to be a rival to St Andrew’s in the South of England, St George’s is consistently ranked amongst the leading courses in the World. The Club occupies a unique place in the history of golf, for it was here in 1894, that the Open Championship was first played outside Scotland. In all there have been 14 Open Championships played at St George’s, more than any course outside of Scotland. The Open Championship returns to St George’s for the 15th time in 2020.

Royal Cinque Ports

Host to 2 Open Championships at the beginning of the 20th century and conveniently located within walking distance of fellow past Open Championship host Princes G.C. and 2020 Open Championship host Royal St Georges, I challenge you to name a more iconic trio of courses within such proximity! This fast, undulating links course requires immense imagination to conquer; it gets more enjoyable every time you return to play here.

Princes

Host to the 1932 Open Championship where Gene Sarazen won and completed his career grand slam. The course was destroyed by German bombers in WW2 . In the re-building of the course they remarkably saved 17 of the original greens, incorporating them into the new 27 hole layout. What they created was a classic "links and a half" layout with raised greens, rippled fairways, deep bunkers and of course, thick links rough. The “Himalayas” 9 was re-designed in 2018, transforming it into the best of the 3 loops.

Rye

Strong driving is an absolute must on this magnificently quirky links, famous for its members’ remarkably quick pace of play and heavy lunches- which by the way rivals the lunch at Royal St Georges. With play restricted to 2 balls or foursomes, there’s plenty of time for 36 holes in a day and a bottle of wine (or 2) in between; if lunch gets a bit too heavy then I would recommend playing the Jubilee course in the afternoon, a slightly tamer test but in its own right a marvelous course.
