Through an online charity auction selling rounds of golf, mini golf trips and exclusive experiences with professional golfers, we have managed to raise over £18,000 for NHS Charities Together.
With Coronavirus lockdown measures in place and no tour groups to look after for a while, I thought why not utilise this free time to do something positive. Over a 3 week period myself, professional golfer Inci Mehmet and friend Dominic Thurlow-Wood of Christies put together an impressive list of lots to auction off for charity, pulling in a ton of favours Halcyon Golf Travel's suppliers and our extended golfing networks. Special thanks to Fundraising-Auctions for providing us with the software to run the auction- they were delightful to deal with and have a very professional product.
The support and generosity of British golf clubs has been truly outstanding, especially considering the difficulties clubs are currently facing with the loss of revenue from visitor green fees and catering. We have also received a great amount of support from the wider golfing community; The Ladies European Tour helped tremendously with promoting the auction and also donated two lots. LET players Inci Mehmet and Gemma Dryburgh kindly agreed to give up their time to play with some auction winners and many more players from the tour shared the auction with their followers on social media. We also received donations from major champion coach Daniel Grieve in the form of a Short-game School and world no.59 Tom Lewis who very generously offered to take 2 punters round his home course Queenwood, one of the most exclusive venues in England.
What was initially just an idea to keep our minds busy and raise a bit of money for charity during these concerning times turned out to be much more. It has evolved into a display of the golf community coming together to hep others, which has been very refreshing to see and be part of. It’s been a real team effort and we couldn’t have raised such a significant amount of money without the help, support and generosity of the hundreds of golfers and members of the golf industry who made this happen.
Thank you to everyone for supporting Halcyon Golf Travel’s first charity fundraiser, there will be many more to come!
Where will the money go?
The NHS Charities National Covid-19 Urgent Appeal was launched to acknowledge and support NHS staff, volunteers and patients impacted by Covid-19 across the country. The campaign was put together in liaison with national health service bodies, NHS Charities Together member charities and board.
The money raised is funding grants to help NHS charities support NHS staff, volunteers and patients in ways above and beyond what NHS funding can ordinarily provide, including wellbeing packs, rest and recuperation rooms, electronic tablets for isolated patients to communicate to loved ones. The funds will also resource vital care partnerships and longer term mental health recovery of staff and families.
